About Yolk Local
I'm Tom: a software engineer based in York, an outdoor explorer, and a farmer's son from Malton.
Growing up on my family's farm in Old Malton alongside cattle, pigs, sheep, and chickens, my interest in technical things grew right alongside a genuine love for the countryside. Today, I work as a software engineer, and writing code or building web apps is just as much a personal passion as it is my day job.
The idea for Yolk Local started after I adopted some ex-battery hens from the British Hen Welfare Trust and began putting their extra eggs out for sale at the side of the road. I realised how hard it is for smallholders to get noticed if local buyers don't already know which back roads to drive down. I built this site as a completely free tool where producers can easily list their stalls with photos and what3words locations, making it simple to find fresh, low-food-mile eggs right on your doorstep.
Why Chickens & Eggs?
I've always loved the inquisitive nature of chickens. They are far more than just birds that lay eggs; each one has its own distinct personality.
Hens that have plenty of space to roam live a much healthier, happier life, and their eggs are a brilliant source of vitamins and nutrition. Don't know what to cook? An omelette with plenty of cheese always goes down well (bonus points if it includes Snowdonia Black Bomber!)
